Permanent Shelter Update

Arlene Parker | Published on 5/4/2020

Hello Everyone -

This message is to update you on the status of the permanent shelter project. At the 2019 AGM the rationale for the project was discussed by the Membership. The shelter will provide a shield from the elements. The Club witnessed the temporary nature of the canvas structures at the Pig Roast in July.

Jerry Selk has worked tirelessly on this project for the last 6+ months. John Davies, Rob McCrea, Philip Keightley and Dave MacLaren have supported Jerry in pulling the details together. It has been a struggle sourcing construction and concrete providers thus far. Suitable contractors have now been sourced.

A Trillium Grant application in the amount of $25,000 was unsuccessful. A Municipality of Bluewater application for a grant for 25% of the project amount to a maximum of $10,000 was successful. The costing for the original concept of multiple structures was deemed unattainable. The concept was revised to a single 20 ft X 40 ft structure.

Rob McCrea prepared a site plan showing the proposed location - a snip is below:

John Davies prepared a detailed parts list for costing as well as an elevation plan. Philip contributed structural engineering support because the shelter has  Building Code ‘Public Assembly’ standard and requires engineered plans for a building permit.

The shelter elevations are below:

The Board is currently evaluating the Club’s financial capacity to take on the project this year. The Municipal grant must be used prior to year end. The Board will further communicate when a decision has been made. Please feel free to email the Board if you have any questions regarding this project.
